"I
was medevaced from Afghanistan last October. I got blown up again and damaged
my lower back and broke a bone in my neck and it's been a long road since
then," says Spc. Meyer about his injuries.
The past
few years haven't been easy for the soldiers, who say pain is a normal part of
life.
"I
mean every time I take a step I feel it in my leg, but it's something that you
have to overcome," says SSgt. Misuraca.
But Meyer
and Misuraca, along with wounded warriors from several posts are working to
overcome that pain during the 2012 Warrior Games, four days of friendly
competition.
"Our
job is to recover, so while we're recovering we're having a little fun,"
says Spc. Meyer.
Competing
in events such as swimming, not only helps these soldiers heal physically, it
helps emotionally as well.
"You
go from being 26 and being the best at everything you do to walking with a cane
for a year. Now you get up every morning and you have something to compete against,"
says SSgt. Misuraca.
Battling
it out, not just against each other, but for this country leaves some of these
warriors with Purple Hearts, and all the wounded veterans, humble heroes.
"I
don't feel like I'm a hero, anybody would do what I did," says SSgt.
Misuraca.
